It's not as full featured as, say, Pillars of Eternity or Dragon Age on the RPG side, nor is it as refined an RTS as Age of Empires (or something more contemporary), but the merging of the two genres has rarely been done this well. The use of RTS scale (map sizes, army sizes, etc) makes the scope of your adventure seem all the more grand. Furthermore, it manages to make the game avoid the cop-out titles like the aforementioned Dragon Age tend to fall into, where a massive, Helms Deep style confrontation is teased, but never followed up on.An important detail to keep in mind about the RTS portion; while the actual unit functionality feels less developed than other titles, the economic management side of things is very, very different from the norm. It is more similar to games like Company of Heroes, in its sector-based resource control. A lot of your strategy is going to come down to figuring out which sectors you want to keep as production points, and which will be your forward bases. No easy task, and one that can seem overwhelming at first. However, once you get the hang of it in about two or three missions, it works out. The plot is surprisingly well done. It is cliche' in it's specific beats (mages vs. zealots sounds very familiar...), but the voice acting and -most- of the dialogue are spot on. Character motivations are likewise rarely perplexing, and make sense within the context of the world. Visually, this game is something special. Props to the devs for overhauling the series art direction and -not- going into the cheeky "thongs everywhere" approach of the previous titles, and instead opting for a grittier, more realistic look. This does wonders to, again, pull you into the adventure. One drawback about the visuals though; it can get hard to tell your buildings apart from environmental structures like houses and the like, especially on crowded maps. My biggest complaints with the game are to do with its UI and some aspects of the RPG system. It's not that the UI is bad or non-functional. It's more to do with how it feels like it needed some additional features. A way to identify which sectors have what buildings at a glance would be welcome, as right now it can be a little maddening to keep track of what zone is doing what. Sins of a Solar Empire managed to do this really well, so I can only hope that the devs take notes from that game. Camera control, likewise, can be extremely problematic in heavily forested maps, since it does not clip through objects obstructing your view. They desperately need to add this in a future expanse... Finally; the RPG system feels a little strange in its rules. Attribute stats do not feel equally important in some cases, and do not really work the way you would either expect or have seen handled in other titles. A last and not as major nitpick I had was that I wished some of the maps were a little more open, as fielding an army can become difficult in such constrained spaces. With all of that said, I would certainly recommend this game. It's one of the few good fantasy-RTS\/ RPG games out there today, and I personally feel like it does a better job combining the two genres than even heavyweights like Wacraft 3 and Warlords: Battlecry.. RTS campaign that is not just "build base, destroy enemies". Has actual adventure elements to it.Can be janky at times, but it is Spellforce Euro jank.. This game is a huge disappointment in every way possible.-) The "RTS" in this game is laughable. Once you run out of ressources (there is VERY little food on most maps) you're basically f**ked and the enemy (who has endless armies) just starves and crushes you. Great fun.-) The heroes and units have SEVERE pathing issues, which leas to them getting stuck, running circles or otherwise being COMPLETELY useless while getting stomped. Super great.-) The smaller skirmishes and fights are EXTREMELY easy, while in big clashes the difficulty skyrockets. The balancing is way off here. Amazing treat. The story was kinda intriguing, I'll give them that but that is WAY too little to help this poor attempt of a game be anything more than a waste of 20 bucks.... Although I've never played the SpellForce series before I like games like this. There's enough rpg as opposed to rts in case you aren't a big fan of rts games or if you're new to them, so it plays almost like an arpg game, with fully voiced dialogue and in a comfy fantasy world. 5\/5. Only 6 hours in at this point and I'm drawn in by the story. The graphics are wonderful and the village building before major encounters is amazing compared to just run in and kill style games. It's my first SpellForce game and I love it. If you're into Divinity and Warcraft, this is a combo if the two. I love Divinity I and II and Pillars of Eternity and Tyranny. This game stacks up to those. I definately recommend this game so far. I will update with more hours.. Totally worth its price. I played the game in May 2019 and it was bug free, never crashed and was overall awesome. The story is solid, the characters you can have in your party are diverse, the voice acting is top notch. The build diversity is very balanced. You can play the game like an ARPG if you want, or you can RTS build and use "crafted" units if you prefer that style. If you go the ARPG route, I highly suggest making your character a healer, focus on willpower, white magic, cooldown reduction, spell cost reduction and then sit back and heal your 3 party members. The dwarf is hands down a the best tank once you upgrade his armor thru quests\/items. That leaves you with 2 other party members to use as you want. I also suggest the Orc as a fireball tossing mage with pumped up intelligence and firespells. You can't really go wrong though, you can crutch on healing pots if you had to and just run 4 DPS. Game is awesome.. The only bad thing about this game is the horrid coop implementation. Why oh why can't each player have their own hero. This would have made the game incredible. Instead in coop it just isn't very good.Still, the SP is solid and fun - but I can't help but feel like a massive opportunity was wasted..... As a crawler\/rpg its a great game, great story and amazing graphics. As an RTS its in the top 3 worst ive ever played. There is just too much going on at once that you lose track of champions, units, and other played objects. The resource system is absolutely le garbage, and over complicated for the sort of AI you go against at Normal+. The enemy having a seemingly endless supply of both resources and units and as soon as a main army is moved from one base, the enemy attacks in three times the units you just slew. Enemies are dmg sponges and all these combined made it an absolutely terrible and boring experience for me. 2\/10 as an RTS, 8\/10 as an rpg\/dungeon crawler.
